Favourite Comics Covers - 'Wonder Woman'
Batman may be my favourite DC character, but Wonder Woman is a very close second.
My introduction to Wonder Woman wasn’t via the comic but the 1970s TV series, starring Lynda Carter, such fun.
My interest in collecting the comic series only came about following the reboot of the franchise in 1987.
I bought the comic purely on the strength of the penciller, George Pérez, who also worked on the plot.
Pérez, along with writers Greg Potter and Len Wein, discarded previous elements of Wonder Woman’s story, focussing instead on connecting the Amazons and, especially, Diana with the Greek gods, and the impact that would have on the wider world.
Pérez eventually took over as the writer of the series and worked on the Wonder Woman comic for 5 years.
While I enjoyed the stories in subsequent issues, the ones I enjoyed most were the issues that featured George Pérez’s art, issue #24 being the last.
As I’d stopped collecting comics sometime in the 1990s, I don’t have issue #600, which has Pérez cover art, and he did some of the interior art as well.
When I watched the 2017 ‘Wonder Woman’ film, the title character’s costume design straightaway reminded me of Pérez’s art.
Here’s the first issue with its wraparound cover:
The following image isn’t a cover, but I love this first sight of Diana in her costume, which is the final image from the first issue:
Of the covers that feature Pérez’s art, these are my favourites:
The cover of issue #10 starts the ‘Challenge of the Gods’ arc…
… and is another wraparound cover.
Going back to the cover art for issue #10, I loved it so much, I bought the poster:
And here are close-ups of the 3 panels:
