'Star Wars: A New Hope' - Reimagining of Scene 38: Ben Kenobi vs. Darth Vader
I’ve been a ‘Star Wars’ fan since I first saw ‘A New Hope’ way back when it was still in the cinemas.
Because I was still living in Malaysia in 1977, when the film was first released, I didn’t watch it then as it took ages for Western films to reach the Far East market back in those days. To be honest, I can’t even remember when it was released in Malaysia. All I do remember is not being aware of it. If anything, it would have just been another sci-fi film.
When I came to England in 1980, for whatever reason, the film was still being shown in certain cinemas. I remember walking through town – Oxford – after college, past the cinema and the poster caught my attention. And I thought, “Why not?” And that was when I got hooked!
I watched it more than once and couldn’t wait for the next one… and the next one.
When the films were released on video, I bought them and watched them so many times, some scenes ended up with unexpected snowy effects! Thank heavens for DVDs.
The original trilogy is still my absolute favourite of the set of trilogies that have since been made.
Of the prequel trilogy, ‘Revenge of the Sith’ is the best.
The final battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin is visually spectacular and chockful with emotion.
As much as I love the original trilogy, I have to admit it is a little jarring to then watch the fight between Ben Kenobi and Darth Vader in ‘A New Hope’. Of course, it is of its time and still has a certain charm.
But what if there is an alternate take on that scene? One that takes into account the highly charged emotive drama from ‘Revenge of the Sith’, where Anakin’s final words to Obi-Wan is “I hate you!”. And uses the memory of that to fuel their final confrontation…
Well, Christopher Clements, the man at the helm of ‘FXitinpost’, and his clever crew have done just that!
He’s a Visual Effects Artist who works to bring ‘creative visions from storyboard to screen’.
As explained in the description box of the FXitinPost YouTube video – “This is a one-off story driven scene reflecting the characters in its chronological order from the point of Revenge of the Sith through Rebels, Rogue One, and all canon material leading to A New Hope.”
It is breathtakingly amazing and I never tire of watching it.
